Hoca Nasreddin see themselves as musical nomads, driven by a shared nervousness of the musically familiar. The same spirit which makes the band feel that musical conventions exist to be undermined, out of which a fragile kind of maybe different music can emerge, one hardly fettered by formal rules yet rich in musicality, one which shimmers in the collective now while being strangely rooted in tradition, one which gives its main focus to timbre and texture, to shifting qualities of sound, to musicality itself. Even though the free-improvising Hoca Nasreddin is perhaps the most avant-garde, most experimental group in Turkey, they also share a love of traditional music, which they see as an extraordinary source of inspiration, and also a reminder that music and magic can be, perhaps should be, perhaps desperately need to be, intertwined.
